Namibia, one dune road at a time.
Which Sandwich Harbour run reaches the lagoon before the tide turns it back. Where the seals outnumber the kayaks. What a Sossusvlei camping safari really costs. Every tour in the country, reviewed.
Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund: three bases, three different weeks.
Nearly every tour in Namibia leaves from one of these three. The capital sits inland on the plateau and sends the long safaris north and south. Walvis Bay is a working port on a lagoon. Swakopmund is a seaside town with the dune belt at the end of its streets.

Windhoek
The capital is where the flights land and the long trips form up. Half a day covers the Christuskirche, the Independence Museum and the craft markets; the other half is spent buying supplies for whatever leaves at dawn. City and township tours run all week, and the multi-day safaris to Sossusvlei and Etosha count their day one from here.

Walvis Bay
Container cranes on one side of the lagoon, flamingos on the other. Boats leave the waterfront for Pelican Point, where the seal colony sits under an old lighthouse and dolphins run alongside the bow. The 4x4 convoys to Sandwich Harbour form up here too, because the route south along the beach starts at the harbour road.

Swakopmund
Palm trees, colonial verandas and a cold grey sea, with the dune belt starting where the last street ends. This is the adventure town: quad bikes and sandboards on Dune 7, fat bikes across the gravel, the Living Desert tour turning up sidewinders and palmato geckos, and skydivers dropping over the whole lot.

The Namib does not do half measures.
Dunes that fall straight into the Atlantic, a seal colony you paddle through, waterholes that bring the animals to you. These are the days people cross the world to book.
What most people book in Namibia.

South of Walvis Bay the dunes walk into the Atlantic.
There is no road. The route runs along the beach between the tide and a wall of sand three hundred metres high, and it only opens when the water is low. Guides read the tide table first and the dune faces second, which is why every operator quotes a different departure time.
What a day in Namibia costs.
Namibian prices split into three clean bands. A township morning and a twelve-day camping safari are both on this list, and the gap between them is the whole point.
City and township mornings, bike tours on the gravel, the audio guide for a self-drive.
The coastal day out: catamaran cruises, kayaking at Pelican Point, quad bikes, most Sandwich Harbour runs.

Three things the Namib does that nowhere else can.
Game drives happen across Africa and dunes exist on three continents. A cold sea fog feeding a desert, a lagoon full of pelicans behind a container port, and sand that ends in surf belong to this eight-hundred-kilometre strip alone.
The seal colony at Pelican Point
The Benguela current runs up this coast straight from the Antarctic, and the cold water carries enough fish to feed roughly sixty thousand Cape fur seals on one sand spit. Kayaks put in behind the lighthouse and the pups come to the boats out of pure curiosity. Mornings are calm; by early afternoon the southwester makes the paddle back hard work.

The Living Desert
It almost never rains in the dune belt behind Swakopmund, so the animals drink fog. A palmato gecko licks condensation off its own eyeballs, the sidewinder buries itself sideways to stay cool, and the fog beetle stands on its head at dawn to run water down into its mouth. Guides read tracks in the sand and dig; the whole tour is over by lunch.

The dune wall at Sandwich Harbour
A World Heritage lagoon sits behind the highest coastal dunes on earth, with no road in and a beach route that closes with the tide. Drivers let their tyres down at the salt works and climb the faces on the way back for the view down onto the water. Take the lunch option: the tide, not the itinerary, decides when you leave.

At Etosha the waterholes do the work.
The pan is a salt flat so large it shows from orbit, and in the dry months every animal in the park has to come to the same handful of springs to drink. Sit at Okaukuejo or Halali long enough and elephant, oryx, giraffe and black rhino arrive in turn. Game drives run full-day and half-day from the gates; the long safaris pick it up on day three.

Township tours in Windhoek and Swakopmund.
Katutura in Windhoek and Mondesa in Swakopmund are residential neighbourhoods, home to a large share of each town's population. Tours are led by guides who live there and usually take in the community market, a local eating house, a craft workshop and a stop for a beer. Most run three to four hours in the morning; several include lunch.

Plan the Swakopmund coast around the fog, not the forecast.
The Benguela current pushes a thick sea fog inland most mornings, and it can sit over Swakopmund and Walvis Bay until eleven. It rarely cancels anything, but it changes what is worth doing: dune photography and skydiving want the burn-off, while the Living Desert tour, a lagoon cruise or a township morning are better in the grey. Book the sunrise trips for the second half of your stay so you have a spare morning.
The Namibia bookings that will not wait.
Most of the coast can be booked from your guesthouse the night before. These cannot: they run on tides, on small vehicle counts and on camps that hold a fixed number of beds.
- 01Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbour TourThe beach route opens with the low tide, so each day has a fixed departure and a small number of vehicles.
- 0212 Day Classic Namibia Camping SafariMulti-day camping trips fix their departure dates months out and the campsites inside the parks sell out first.
- 03Full or Half-Day Game DrivePark permits and a seat in a 4x4 with a guide are counted per vehicle, and the dry-season weeks fill early.
- 04Pelican Point Kayaking Half-Day TourKayaks launch on the calm morning water only, so a day holds one departure and a handful of boats.
